Photography: 808 vs N8 vs 920 vs 820 Part III

I recently went outside equipped with the Nokia 808 PureView, the Nokia N8, the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820 to take a few pictures for a short camera comparison.

For easier publishing and more convenient reading on your side, I decided to release the result in multiple posts.

In case you missed the first two parts of this comparison, you can find it here (Part I) and here (Part II).
Read on, to see the next picture of my comparison ;)

Automatic Mode

The third picture of my comparison, is shot in automatic mode.
So let's see how it goes with more distance to the subject... shots like this are more difficult for mobile phone cameras, so the difference between the results should be more significant than in the previous macro mode examples.
Nokia 808 PureView
8 MP (16:9), everything else set to automatic.

12MP (4:3), all settings are set to automatic.

With a lot of tiny details and the light bursting through the leaves, this was a difficult shot for all cameras.

Cropped

I decided to crop out two different sections this time.
The first one is a crop of 360*640 pixel from the centre of the photo, where the focus was.

Here I cropped an area of 640*360 out of the photo's right side, so you can see some of the detail of the white flowers.

Summary

I think I did a pretty good job here, framing the exact same scene on all devices.

As always, the 808 PureView (Phase 1) did a perfect job getting the colours and contrast right and as far as those values go, I don't have much critics for the N8 either.
Surprisingly the usually (in my opinion) "too vivid" Windows Phone 8 phones are a little bit pale... the 820 did quite well, but the 920 colours are just wrong.

Same goes for details. The 808 with it's "pure" pixel shows the best result here, followed by the N8 with its advantage of 12 MP native resolution.
The fence, which was the focus point in this example, is sharp and detailed on all photos, but as soon as we move away from the focus point, the detail is gone on the 820...

I'd like to hear your opinion about the sample photos here.
Feedback/critics about my comparison is welcome too of course ;)

  1. Great comparison!

... but why is it seperated on multiple parts? ;)

PS: My current cfw is The One N8 v6.2.0 - nice job here also! :)

    1. thanks for the compliment ;)
also great to hear you like my n8 cfw!

i decided to go with multiple parts, because it is easier to write in my freetime. i also think it is more convenient to read, when there is less scrolling involved :p

as a nice side effect, i had something to post on my blog through the whole week, instead of a single large post by the start of this week.

  2. Well, as it was supposed to be, the photos taken with the 808 and N8 are really very impressive and natural, although the WP's are not bad but the colours.
The only "thing" I found taken poor light photos with the 808, is the autofocus. It seemed not to focus at long ranges, and not set the focus at infinite, as supposed to do.
Would you make some tests with the four phones? I think it would be interesting too.
Thank you very much for sharing all this stuff!

    1. you are right about the low light photography on the 808.
the 808 behaves poorly in general on automatic settings, in bright daylight, thats not an issue... but on low light and other difficult scenes, the 808 isn't "smart" enough to adjust correctly :(

luckily manuall settings are easy accessible on the 808.

i keep a future "low light comparison" in mind!
the lumia 820 now belongs to my sister, so it's out of the game... and with my 808 currently in repair, i can't do it anytime soon.

      thanks for your feedback ;)
