Nokia 808 Case Replacement (disassemble and reassemble)

In this tutorial, I will show you how to disassemble and reassemble your Nokia 808 PureView.
You can use this knowledge for repairs or to switch the housing to change the colour.

A long time ago, I wrote a similar Review/How To about disassembling the Nokia N8.
According to feedback back then, my tutorial was missing pictures and detailed descriptions... I hope this time I did a better job in documenting the process ;)

Windows 8 Gift Card giveaway

I recently won a 10$ gift card for the Windows 8 Store.
(Since the payment options of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are linked to your Microsoft Account, that gift card should work on both and maybe even the Xbox?)

Unfortunately for me, I didn't check the exact "terms and conditions" of that online contest... the code I got is only valid in the USA.

So I can't use it myself.
If you are an Windows 8/Windows Phone 8 user reading this, located in the USA. You can have it!

Send me an Email to "theone1893 @ outlook.com" (no spaces), the first one contacting me can have the gift card code.

*Just to be clear here (legally), this is not a contest nor am I selling anything. All I am doing is giving away something I don't need. If the code doesn't work for you either (for whatever reason), don't blame me :p

Edit

Ok, that was fast... already got the first email.
I hope the code works for you, enjoy it Guillermo ;)

Swiss Indoors Basel: Video performance of the Lumia 1020

For the first time ever, I uploaded a video to Youtube :p
When it comes to the content, its probably not very interesting...

However, it shows lots of different aspects of the Nokia Lumia 1020's video performance, so it may be worth watching anyway ;)

The video took place at the Swiss Indoors in Basel (Denis Istomin vs Roger Federer).
It's at the very beginning of the match and shows the events from the players entering the court, up to the coin toss.

Unboxing the Nokia Lumia 1020 & first impression!

Some of you may already heard that I ordered a Nokia Lumia 1020.

I recently posted a Lumia 925 unboxing, which I got for free with a renewal of my contract (it will be a Christmas present for my brother)... now I got to unbox the Lumia 1020 and this time, the phone is for myself (replacing my Nokia 808)!

For the Lumia 1020 I paid 400.- CHF (~325.- Euro) with a renewal (24 months) of another family members contract (letting me use that subscription was kind of a birthday present to me :)).
At this point, I would also like to thank Franz for his generous donation, making the Lumia 1020 even more affordable to me ;)

I pre-ordered the Lumia 1020 at the end of September, which means I will get a free camera grip.
Unfortunately I will have to wait for that accessory, it is not available yet in Switzerland.

Last Tuesday my Lumia 1020 arrived and I took a few pictures of it for this unboxing :)

A few little tools by huellif

Hello there,

I am Fabian a.k.a. huellif and this is my first Blog post :)

Daniel allowed me to share a few of my apps here, if you are intrested into coding tutorials for Symbian (QtQuick, Qt or native C++) please drop a comment and I can make a few tutorials for beginners.

CloseMaps 1.1

This is a little tool to close all maps backgound processes.

The usuage is: more RAM and other apps can use the compass.

By default other apps can't use the compass after you used Maps, the is the unly fix except a reboot.

Some informations:

This app has no UI, just a little popup to show it did run.

It kills following processes:
- smart2go.exe
- s2gvariantserv.exe
- maps.exe
- drive.exe
- syncshare.exe

- odnpserver_0x2001a983.exe

check the source code:via GitHub

Download it from DailyMobile forum

WhatsApp modifier 1.4

This tool brings some extra features for WhatsApp for Symbian.

It can completly close WhatsApp (incl. all background processes and push notifications), what's not possible by default.

Also it's the only app which can hide (and restore) the homescreen popup of new messages, a lot of people don't like it.

As candy you it can replace the WhatsApp icon, you can use multiple icons from a cool coverflow view.

I should stop writing, check the screenshoots ;)

SVGB2SVG 1.3

Symbian graphics are stored in .mif files.

You can open, view, extract and replace them on your phone via the free app MIFEditor.

But some are no .svg files, they are .svgb files.

Most editors and webpages don't accept .svgb and you can't edit .svg wiht a text editor (like X-Plore)

On a PC you can convert them via free tools, but this tool provides a way to do this directly on your phon.

You can convert single files or folders, renamed .nvg files or animated .svgb files are not supported, it's not possible to convert them at this moment.

A goodie is .svg to custom size png/jpg/bmp support, usefull to upload graphics or send them e.g. via WhatsApp. You can test a version with this feature here

Currently I am working on a proper preview of the export to png/jpg/bmp feature.

CAknDiscreetPopup

This is a little open source example which shows how to call a native C++ function via a QtQuick UI.

(with and without a value).

also get it via GitHub

meinTV

currently my only app in Nokia Store, please download it from there and write a review :)

It's a little tool which can show you livestreams of:

- ARD

- ZDF

- ZDF_neo

- ZDFinfo

- zdf.kultur

in diffrent qualities.

The streams are offical and you have to pay GEZ to use it legally!

Also you can open ARD and ZDF Mediathek in default browser, or TV Movie.

If you like to, you can store 10 own channels on your phone.

Old Hotmail-Account permanently deactivated

Just a short heads-up about a recent change in my Email address.
When I started this Blog, I used an old Hotmail address for personal communication, this address is now permanently deleted.

People finally stopped sending me mails to my old address "the_one.89@hotmail.com" a few months ago :)
So I felt it was time to finally delete my Hotmail account for good.

By the end of last year, I switched to Outlook.com in order to have a fresh start with new Microsoft-Account for Windows 8/Windows Phone 8.

So if you want to contact personally, use "theone1893 at outlook.com".

Unboxing the Lumia 925 and my first impression

I recently had the chance to renew my contract and that got me a Lumia 925 for free :)

So here are a few pictures from me unboxing the Lumia 925 and also a few next to the Nokia 808 for size comparison.
Also included in this post is my first impression about this device.

Something up ahead, the Lumia 925 is the most gorgeous Nokia device in a long time!

Sign a petition to: Release Symbian Source Code to open source

Nokia Corporation & Microsoft Corporation: Release Symbian Source Code & Make It Open Source & Release latest update builds & Save the environment

Since Nokia cancelled all firmware updates for their Symbian phones &
Microsoft probably have no intention to keep Symbian OS, because they are concentrating on Windows mobile

I HEREBY DECLARE TO WISH FOR THE RELEASE OF
SYMBIAN OS SOURCE CODES AND LATEST BUILDS TO OPEN SOURCE
FOR DEVELOPMENT & FUNCTIONALITY REASONS FOR MILLIONS OF
SYMBIAN & S40 SERIES USERS ALL OVER THE WORLD

Symbian Os & Nokia's S40 series still cover 20% of mobile os shares worldwide according to "Statcounter - Global Stats"
According to other Global statistic corporations, like Gartner & Canalys the world share of mobile os, depending on the used browser to log on to the web shows that Symbian still has over 20 million users.
A lot of these people have trusted Nokia as their phone provider for over 20 years
these users paid lots of money to receive products that were long known as the best cell phones in the world, and they supported the Nokia Corporation and its Employees for a long, long time.

The biggest competitor in mobile Os already has open source projects and allows development and distribution all over the world
It would be a shame if the users of Symbian & S40 Series would be forced to change their phones, just because of functionality reasons, that some developers might be able to re-program and provide for others

AND, it would be an environmental catastrophe, if over 20 million phones were thrown away in the next 2 – 3 years
SO PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION & KEEP SYMBIAN ALIVE BEFORE IT GETS FORGOTTEN

go here to sign the petition:

p.s. PLEASE spread the word to everyone you know and every tech and phone forum you know

Nokia 808: remove tethering/JoikuSpot restrictions for USA

This is a short tutorial about how to enable JoikuSpot/Wi-Fi-tethering on the Nokia 808 PureView, in countries where it is usually blocked (e.g. USA).
I am getting asked about this modification a lot, which is why I decided to write a tutorial about it.

If you are running "The One Reloaded" custom firmware on your 808, you do not have to apply this, my Mod is already integrated in there!

This tutorial is for users of different custom firmwares or (hacked) original firmwares only.

Photography: 1. August 2013

Today I'd like to share a couple of low light photos shot on the Nokia 808 PureView.

Taken this year at the official Swiss national day, the 1. August, in Basel.

I used the creative settings to adjust for the low light scene.
You can take a look at the Exif data on Flickr for details...

Mediafire is finally back!

You have been patiently waiting for this and now its finally happening:

Mediafire is replacing Uploaded.net as my default file hoster!

The files are online and ready for download.

Just take a look at the download tab on my Blog. I think all the important stuff is there and is now well organised...
If you are missing anything, let me know what and I will upload it for you ;)

Disqus ready for action!

Disqus is now set up as our new commenting system and all previous comments have been imported.

I already announced that we switched to Disqus in this post...
In short those are the advantages of Disqus over the default Blogger comments:
  • Support for Disqus-, Facebook-, Twitter-, Google+ Accounts (you can also post as Guest without login)
  • No more captcha codes for loged-in users
  • Easier following up on your own comments
  • Easier communication with other users
  • Following comments of a specific post via RSS/Email
  • Improved view (new comments first) and comment ratings are available
  • Hopefully improved spam filter
  • Moderation of Comments is now possible for us
  • Support for attachements (e.g. photo's or screenshots)
  • Support for hyperlinks
Also important, the comments are still synchronised to Bloggers default commenting system.
That means, the old RSS feed for comments will continue to work!

And if we ever decide to leave Disqus (because it becomes a paid service or shuts down its doors), we will still have all the comments (including all future comments) and can easily switch back to our previous (or another new) solution.

So give it a try and drop a comment, tell me what you think about it!

Update

I made some small but significant changes to our Disqus setup:
  • removed advertisment
  • improved performance
  • fixed compatibility for mobile webbrowsers
Let me know if you notice any issues with Disqus, I am looking forward to some feedback ;)
Btw. thanks to Franz for his comment (made me realize that there were problems in mobile browsers)!

New Commenting System and other Blog changes

If you kept following us here, you know that we are working on the design of our Blog.

So here is a short heads up about what's changed recently.

Upcoming posts and Mediafire

Remember this post where I announced the switch to Mediafire?

It's been half a month and as you can see, we are still on uploaded.net...
The thing is, after I started uploading my files, I received multiple strikes against my account.

According to the automatically generated emails, I violated the terms and conditions of Mediafire (which could lead to a termination of my account).

So a lot of my files were blocked shortly after uploading.

Thanks to the very friendly Mediafire Support, we were able to resolve this issue.
I can now continue to upload and share my files. Everything currently hosted on uploaded.net will soon be available via Mediafire!

Other than that, I have one more photography post to share with you guys and a short review/tutorial about how to disassemble the Nokia 808 PureView... so remember to check this blog for new content soon ;)

Making it easier to follow us, I added a new followers gadget to the sidebar.
Options to follow us via Twitter, RSS feeds and Email are now easily available.

Photography: 4 Seen Höhenwanderung

Here are some pictures from another one of my summer activities this year...

For the non-English speaking users, the title translates into something like "4-lakes-hiking".

So what you do is, you go to "Engelberg" one of Switzerlands mountains and you walk/hike around until you saw 4 mountain lakes :p

Takes about 4 hours, if you take it slow...

But enough of the blabla, here are the pictures:
