The One v6.1.0

Meryy Christmas everyone!!

Here is a little present for all the N8 users out there.
The main idea of this update was to bring the N8 to the same level my recently released Belle Refresh CFW's for the E7/X7 are.

v6.1.0 is now ready for download, take a look at the change logs and read on for the release notes.

Why v6.x?

If you read the description about how I use version numbers, you may ask why this is version 6.x and not v5.6.0.
(If you did not read the description, go and read it! I didn't write it just for fun :p)

Since v5.5.0, I was working on many different devices/versions... starting from scratch based on OFW instead of continuing v5.x seemed to be easier for me.

So it is not v6.x because we have a new base, this CFW has a new major version number because I started over on this device... it is still based on the latest Belle Refresh v111.040.1511.

Testing and Bugs

I had access to a N8 for testing, but that time was very limited.
Please report any issues and bugs you may find...

When starting with a new base, it is possible that some smaller things don't work perfectly and there are maybe minor bugs.

Translations

The full translations by freaxs_r_us are not fully compatible, because of some new mods.
I suggest to wait for updated language files by him, in case you need additional languages.

Remember it is Christmas!

So please be patient, it may take a while 'till we can come up with bug fixes (if necessary) or translations.

All the best from me, enjoy the holidays!! ;)

  1. Keeping me on my toes, huh? I don't have a changlog yet, but I have a pretty good idea of what you modded. Translations should be "easy" to make. But it will still take time. ....so is this my Christmas present? = more work ;)

  6. Hallo theOne,

      gruss

    1. Wrong thread to post this question. Which language doesn't have the radio? Did you translate it yourself? More information please...and go to the 808 thread...ok answer you there

    2. check the main menu folder "misc." the fm radio client is in there.
(as well as the "play via radio" (fm transmitter))

  9. Dear Daniel,

First –I would like to thank you for your continues support for those of us that still use the N8.

Now, I am afraid that there are 2 issues with the new release (6.1.0):
    1. It does not sync the calendar with the latest Nokia suite (3.6.36). I am getting an error 8100011.
    2. The phone dialer (T9) is available only in English even though I have installed also Hebrew (the good old rofs3)

All the best and a happy new year,
    David (DR)

    2. Hey David,

good to see you here again ;)

as freaxs_r_us mentioned, old translations are not fully compatible.

the calendar sync issue will be fixed in the next update.
it was reported on my x7 cfw too, so it i know where to look for this bug.

workaround in the mean time would be going back to v5.5 or use another method to sync (like "exchange activesync").
i try to fix it asap, but with holidays and new year... probably takes a few days.

      regards
      Daniel

  10. Hallo theOne,

  12. Hi, Many thanks for the update!
Currently I use the V5.5.0 - funny I installed it on the 24th Dec... I guess I wait until the bugs are ironed, took a while to install all my apps again.
However, after a few days with your firmware, it feels like a new, different phone, I am impressed by your work!

I checked the changelog here of the v6.1.0:
    http://theonecfw.blogspot.hu/p/nokia-n8-00-summarized-changelog.html

    Requests:
    * Can the e-mail cache moved to E:\ ?
This is the major spacehog on C:\ (of course after the web browser cache, which I see is you moved to E:\).
    * Can you make somehow Opera to open up when clicking on links in built in apps? At least in e-mail?
    * Can you make a link for this changelog somewhere in the CFW? (Maybe as a bookmark, or in the Phone management menu?
    * Is there a way to quickly switch from Camera to Gallery, and back? I used the CamFX app, but somehow it doesn't work on your firmware.

    1. v6 is supperior in many ways to v5.5, but it is in a very early stage...

so waiting for a fixed v6.x is a good strategy for most users.
although i am happy to see bug reports from other users, since i can not test everything (and every little detail) myself...

      about your requests:
-not that i know of, i don't think i can move the email cache

-install opera mobile (not opera mini), go to "settings -> application settings -> default applications -> browsing internet -> select opera" to change your default browser. thats all you can do, don't know how deep the integration will be though...

-interesting idea, but i think the rss feed should be enough. you can use the rss widget or open the feed in your browser to keep track of my blog (if i change the changelog, i mention it in form of release notes for a new version).
visiting my blog and bookmark the changelog takes only a few seconds to do it yourself anyway ;)

-CamFX does work in my CFW, used it myself on v5 and also tested it on v6.
check the settings for camfx and make sure the gallery is up to date (after a clean flash, the thumbnails need to be refreshed)

    2. Hi,

The "default browser" options seems broken from Belle refresh...even if setting opera mobile as default (even setting the same in the further 'advanced' option) and restarting , the phone still only uses 'web' as default.

Maybe you can fix what nokia broke, Thanks

    3. hi,
sorry mate, i don't think i can do anything about this...
like i mentioned, i don't how "deep" the integration of another webbrowser can be.

have you tried opening a link from a note or text file?

    1. more widget, new mods/updates, faster and thanks to growing experience on my side better "organized" (easier for me to keep track of all changes in my firmwares).

but yeah, still not perfect :(

  21. Hi,
I discovered your blog today and I'm quite intrigued by the Custom Firmwares. Good to know that there are still people out there supporting Symbian!
I have a query w.r.t this CFW. Will installing this CFW prevent me from upgrading to a new firmware if Nokia releases one? And would this void my warranty? I have a 2 yr old N-8 so not worried about its warranty. But I'm planning to get an 808 so wanted to know.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Vigi,

Upgrading to newer firmwares is not a problem, you may have to do it by flashing via Phoenix (same process as flashing a CFW), but certainly possible!

Basically, you do void your warranty by flashing a CFW.
(according to Nokia, you even void your warranty by flashing a original firmware via Phoenix...)

But you can flash you phone back to its original Firmware and Nokia won't be able to tell you used a CFW ;)

So I would not worry to much about it...

    1. still the same, btw. i think "endurable" depends a lot on your personal opinion...

contact me via email and i tell you how to decrease the volume (requires flashing)

  26. umm...i might seem like a complete noob but google hasn't come up with a satisfactory answer.
I tried flashing my N8 with the CFW but facing problems. I'll list the steps i did so that you can guide me if I've gone wrong somewhere.

    1. Unzipped RM-596 The One N8 v6.1.0 to the folder C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-596.
    2. Connect the phone using USB
    3. Open Phoenix and select USB-RM596
    4. Then click on File>Open Product and i select RM596.
    5. Click on Flashing>Firmware Update
    6. Click the 3 dots and select the only option that comes, 0599841-euro2_gr-2.0
    7. I am unable to click on Dead Phone USB Flashing as given in your guide. Its gray and not clickable. What do i do?

Please help. btw my phone is switched off during the entire time.

    Thanks

      Gruss
      Daniel
