v5.5.0 (N8)

I planned to announce v5.5.0 this evening with all the details and a big surprise.

Looks like many of you already found the new version in the download folder... so I think I should give you some details ahead.

v5.5.0 is the same version as v5.4.0!
The difference is, v5.5.0 is English only.
As you can see in the change log, there are upcoming translations by freaxs_r_us.

More details about that and an appropriate "Welcome" to freaxs_r_us will follow soon.

If you are running v5.4.0 and you are happy with English only, you can skip v5.5.0.

  2. Hi Dan.
I don't get it. You mean that v 5.40 is english only, while 5.50 is open for other laguages right?

    Thanks

    1. hi depaul,

      v5.4.0 is english and german

v5.5.0 is english only, which is better for full translations.

of course v5.5.0 can be used as standalone version in english only, but there is no point in updating if you are already running v5.4.0 (and don't care about additional languages).

  3. Hello and thank you so much for the great work and talent you have!
I have a quick question,I am trying to figure out.
Currently I have v5.3.0 on my N8(very happy with it) and would like to move to v5.5.0.
How do I update it? Or should I just re-flash with new version? I just want to save time with setting the phone up again.
    Thanks a lot!

    1. hey neal,
too many users complained about it.
add it yourself, i uploaded it for you in "tools -> _user requests"

the file you are looking for is "avkon2.mif"
you can change it by replacing the original one in "core or rofs2\resource\apps\", then reflash your device.

or use the joshlog patch to change it from c:\ or e:\

    2. Hey thanks Dan, for uploading...

    any fix?

also i want to remove search widget and functoinality which i never use in belle.how to do this daniel?

    ReplyDelete

    1. well, you can not uninstall the search the regular way.
you could remove it from uda, by deleting the files for the search.

      about the browser
many people claim it got slower than before, i think that is because the engine became heavier due to new features.
the n8 simply is not powerfull enough to use the new engine without some lags once in a while...

try to disable flash and probably java scripts in your browser settings.
some pages may not work with that, but it should give you a nice speedboost

    1. i though you were talking about the search widget only.
the browser plugin and widget are located in uda...

you can remove it from there without touching the core/rofs

    1. both apps are preinstalled in z:\ by nokia.
i removed many preinstalled applications, but i think those two are adding important features to the firmware...

if you want to remove them, you need to delete all files for those apps from rofs2.

  19. I placed the original startup animations at c..tools\startup\mp3 and gif files and it still doesn't show up at bootup.
Another thing, Messaging, Calendar & Contacts stays at running programs even though I exited from it already. Drains the battery, obviously.
One last thing, how can I remove Weather, Search and Contacts from startup? Drains the battery, too.
This is really the best CFW even more if these 'bugs' are fixed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. not all gif files are compatible. try to open the file in your file browser and see if it works... maybe try another startup animation, download one that is confirmed to be working.

also to hear the sound, you need to enable waring tones in your profile settings.

messaging, calendar and contacts stay in ram, to work faster.
if you disable them from running in bg, you will have a delay of about 2 sec everytime you open them!
(btw. they are not starting up automatically, so its like opening them after a restart everytime)

weather is integrated into rom, you need to remove the weather widgets from rofs2.
the search can be disabled from startup in search settings

    1. when you are in the store you can set the settings to install on C, but I would install on E to save resources

      Delete
    2. it depends on the installer...
the installer can decide where to put the files.

if you download/extract the original installer, you can edit it via siscontents to change the path to c:\ (or !:, which will make it "drive free" and allows you to choose during the installtion)

      Delete
  24. yes, in store a changed the settings to install on C but after installation i found the program installed on E
i tried also to copy the program in phone memory and install on C but no difference, program installed on E
@the one : what do you want to say with: f you download/extract the original installer, you can edit it via siscontents ? Can you be more specific

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. when you get the installer of the app you want (e.g. sleeping screen) in form of a sis file, you can edit it via siscontents.

when you open it, you will see that some files will have the path set to "c:\". you can change that path to "e:\" or "!:\"

    1. well, i don't have a belle refresh device anymore to test it myself... so i am not sure, if you still can change the fonts from c:\

the easiest way, is to replace the fonts in rofs2\resource\fonts\ and reflash your device.

if all you are changing is the fonts, you can use "update" instead of "refurbish" to keep all your data.
(but do a backup anyway, just in case ;))

  27. Hi the_one, I found a bug for v5.5 that is when you change another theme in the settings and you shut down your phone and switch on again, then it will reset to Nokia Evolve. I am not sure about whether other users have this problem, but it happening on my phone. So can you try to check it and fix that if possible. Thanks~ :)

    1. you probably know, that i don't have an n8 myself anymore...
i think if there would be a problem in my cfw, somebody would already reported it (~400 downloads and no bugreport so far).

i will ask this question in my daily mobile topic, i am sure somebody will test it for us ;)
i let you know what i find out about it...
(btw. what theme are you useing and is it fully working before you do a restart?)

      Delete
    2. No, I first time use third party theme in v5.5. Later, I try to restart my phone and the theme will automatic reset to Nokia Evolve. After that I want to confirm it this a bug or my phone problem then I try to set the theme to dor$h_[theOne_Edition], it still happen same thing. I am not sure about this , hope you can help me to confirm with other people and give a solution.

Just let you know before I put the avkon2.mif to core, I hope this is not a reason cause the problem.

      Thanks~ :)

    3. since i don't own a n8 anymore, i asked the users in daily mobile forum about this.
i got two reports, that chaning themes is no problem at all in my cfw...

and if i remember correctly, i set up dor$h theme for the new owner of my old n8, when she borrowed me the device to create v5.5...
(didn't want to ask her, because i would have had to explain her what a "theme" is first :p)

don't know if it could be avkon2.mif, incompatible/broken mif's can cause strange bugs sometimes...
more important is the question, how did you flash your phone?
did you clean up e:\ and f:\ and used refurbish?
(if no, what was your previous firmware)

      Delete
    4. Previous I used v5.2, and every time I will clean up e:\ and f:\ after refurbish my phone. Never mind, I will try to flash again and maybe that is avkon2.mif cause this problem.

But big thanks to you can reply me. :)

  32. I have the following problem with my N8 and the "The One 5.5.0" CFW with german translations files (freaxs_r_us):

When I create a calender entry (task or meeting), then the phone reminds me at the entered time. When I choose "Silent" and the "Remind me later", the phone will not remind me again after the chosen reminder-intervall. Is there another setting, which I do not find?

When I used the original Nokia Belle before, the repeating reminder worked the way I described.

    1. i don't have my n8 anymore to test this...
but as far as i remember i didn't had any issues (also nobody else reported this so far).

i recommend to check the settings for clock, calendar and profile for anything helpfull.

otherwise, i will release v6.2 today. you may want to give the new version a try as soon as its ready...

      Delete
    2. Thank you for your quick response!

Yesterday I flashed v6.2 after cleaning the internatl memory and the sdcard from any system files (like you propose in your blog). But this didn't solve my problem - it was the same as I described above. Then I read something on the boards about problems which exist with some themes and the calender, so I tried another theme from N8fanclub. Suddenly the reminder was repeated, but a few hours later, when I tried that again, it didn't work anymore, perhaps because I switched to the silent profile - I wasn't able to get it working again, no idea why it happened again...

Now I installed another firmware (X^4 Xeon), to see, if it works with another cfw. And since yesterday it works from the beginning without changing any settings. Perhaps I have done something wrong when flashing TheOne cfw, I only added the german language files.
Maybe the theme can influence some calender settings?

Perhaps somebody can try this with another N8, if it's a global problem or special with my phone.

    3. Did you "add" the german files yourself? or did you get my translated files?

if you took my files, then I will ask around to see if anybody else has the same problem

      Delete
  33. No I used your translated files, for the 5.5.0 version and the 6.2 version, too; I think it's a bit weird if I would be the first person who realizes this problem, so I'm afraid that I made a mistake with flashing, settings or something else ;) But if somebody, who has installed TheOne with the german files could try if there is a similar problem, then we would see if it's a issue with my phone or a common issue.

Thanks for your help and efforts
